Season 5 of Emily in Paris featured an engagement, breakups and an update on Lucas Bravo‘s missing character Gabriel — but what about everyone else?
Netflix released season 5 on Thursday, December 18, which picked up after Emily (Lily Collins) chose to explore a future with Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini) in Rome. Their professional and personal lives intermingled and led to a split halfway through the season.
Emily and Marcello found their way back to each other but a miscommunication caused her to shut down his proposal. While Marcello didn’t plan to propose, it made them realize that he wanted to be in Rome while Emily preferred Paris. They called it quits for good, which Gabriel (Bravo) was made aware of courtesy of Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu).
Gabriel was absence from most of the season after taking a job on a boat. The final scene of the season showed him in Greece writing a postcard for Emily where he asked her to visit. This left the future of Emily and Gabriel’s romance unclear — for now.
“Assuming we’re picked up, I want to go back to Paris. But I want to go other places too,” director and executive producer Andrew Fleming exclusively told Us Weekly. “It’s teased where we might end up going at the end of season 5 — there’s a possibility we’ll be going there, to Greece.”
Samuel Arnold, who plays Julian, was excited at the prospect of a relocation, telling Us, “I am not going to lie. If they want to shoot in Greece, whatever the reason I say, ‘Let’s go.’ I’ve never been to Greece.”
Another love triangle this season involved Mindy (Ashley Park) secretly hooking up with Alfie (Lucien Laviscount) after splitting from Nico (Paul Forman). They called it quits once Emily found out but there were still feelings there. Nico returned to Mindy’s life, she took him back and they ultimately got engaged — shortly before Lucien was planning to fight for her.
“We really see Emily and Mindy in different situations. I think it’s the first time their friendship departed from how me and Lily have ever interacted,” Park told Us about the friends having a falling out.
The actress pointed out that usually Mindy and Emily mirrored how close her and Collins were in real life.
“But I’m proud of both of those women in the show. We see a real sisterhood and something that develops stronger between them,” Park continued. “But I would say Emily in Paris keeps surprising me.”
According to Park, she “did not see” Mindy’s story lines coming.
“I feel like I got to be in eight different kinds of genres of shows all in one,” she gushed. “What else could you ask for? I never know what to expect. So I’ve just really stopped expecting. It feels like a pinch me moment. So they really keep us on her toes.”
Another breakup involved Sylvie ending her marriage and having brief romantic entanglements throughout the season.
