Amanda Seyfried and Sydney Sweeney are weighing in on the idea of a sequel for The Housemaid.

“I think that we’ll just have to wait and see,” Sweeney, 28, told Entertainment Weekly in an interview published on Sunday, December 21. “I hope that the audience loves the movies just like we love the books, and we can continue to hopefully share that love within more of the films.”

Seyfried, meanwhile, said she’d “absolutely” be game for more films.

“Listen, if it doesn’t do well, you can call it off, but if it does, well, it’s absolutely a franchise,” Seyfried, 40, told the outlet. “I didn’t sign on for anything but this one because my story ends, but they know that if they make another one, I’ll be a part of it, because I had so much fun with Paul [Feig, director].”

The Housemaid is based on Freida McFadden’s 2022 novel of the same name, the first book in her trilogy. McFadden published the sequel, The Housemaid’s Secret, in 2023, followed by The Housemaid Is Watching in 2024. (There was also one novella published in 2024.)

Feig, for his part, told The Hollywood Reporter at the film’s premiere that because The Housemaid is part of a series, “if people show up and see it, I would love to see what Millie does next.”

The story chronicles the life of young housemaid Millie (Sweeney), who moves into the home of Andrew Winchester (Brandon Sklenar) and Nina Winchester (Seyfried). Millie quickly discovers that she was hired for more than just house cleaning.

It is ultimately revealed that Millie was hired as part of Nina’s plans for an escape, with the movie’s final scene showing Millie interviewing for a position with a new family. When the new boss says Millie was recommended to her by Nina, the camera shows a bruise on her wrist — suggesting that Millie might also be helping this woman escape her abusive husband.

Ahead of the film’s release earlier this month, Seyfried revealed on an episode of the “Bookmarked” podcast that the production had “the support” of McFadden.

“We felt empowered because we had her blessing,” Seyfried said in the episode, sharing that Feig was also helpful. “You know, this movie is going to be special and surprising, even for the book lover. I almost feel like I need to read the book again.”

Seyfried, who said that her role as Nina was “the most fun role” she’s “ever played,” noted that the movie was a “therapeutic” experience.

“I channeled one of my fears in life. One of the things that I really struggle with when I’m with people — working with people, or having to be near people — who are unpredictable and hot and cold,” she said. “This is who Nina is when you meet her. It was really, really fun and interesting to channel what I fear most. Try to find the scariest pieces of that and portray them.”

The Housemaid is in theaters now.
