A mother in Iowa is being held on $1 million bond after turning herself in to police in connection with the death of her 3-year-old son.
Back in June, Tiffani R. Huff-Holmes, 41, allegedly awoke from a nap and discovered her small child unresponsive and sitting in a lawn chair in the closed garage. He was “hot to the touch,” his lips were blue, and he was “extremely sweaty,” according to an application for a search warrant reported by the Des Moines Register. After finding him, Holmes reportedly waited between five and 10 minutes before calling 911.
While the dispatcher instructed her to bring him inside the house and to perform CPR, neither she nor emergency responders were able to resuscitate him. The 3-year-old, who remains publicly unnamed by police, was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the tragic incident, law enforcement officers investigating the case found empty bottles of vodka in the home. Holmes alleged that she drank the alcohol after discovering her son’s body. She also admitted to being her son’s “sole caregiver” at the time, and not knowing how long she had been asleep during her nap.
Once the father of the young boy, who was also unnamed, was told what happened, he reportedly informed police that Holmes wasn’t supposed to have any alcohol in the house because she had struggled with a drinking problem for roughly five years. He also told investigators that he didn’t believe the child would have been able to get into the garage on his own, as he couldn’t open doors. During the investigation, it was additionally discovered that the overhead garage door had been broken and had to be manually lifted from the ground for it to be opened.
Six months after her son’s death, Holmes turned herself in to the Polk County Jail on Sunday, December 21. A criminal complaint filed on Monday, December 22, said she’d been accused of “knowingly” choosing to leave her 3-year-old son alone in a hot garage for a “period of time,” resulting in his death by means of hyperthermia.
Hyperthermia is defined by the Cleveland Clinic as a “heat related illness” that involves the body reaching “abnormally high temperatures.” This can include conditions such as heat exhaustion, heat stroke, heat cramps and heat rash. One of the most dangerous of these is heat stroke, which can occur from “doing physical activity in the heat (exertional heat stroke) or simply from being in a hot environment for too long (classic/non-exertional heat stroke).” According to the Des Moines Register, the forecast temperature high for that day was in the low 90s.
Holmes has been charged with child endangerment resulting in death, which is a Class B felony in the state of Iowa.
She is scheduled to appear in court on January 2.
