Billy Porter is sharing an update on his health, four months after being hospitalized with sepsis.
The Emmy winner posted an Instagram video on Monday, December 22, wishing his followers a happy holiday season and offered an update on his health.
In September, Porter, 56, had to drop out of a Broadway production of Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club due to a “serious case of sepsis,” per a statement posted to the show’s social media accounts at the time.
“So, some of you may or may not know that I was in the hospital, very ill this fall, with urosepsis,” Porter said in Monday’s video. “It was not easy. It’s been a very, very challenging four months. But I want everybody to know that I am on the road to a full recovery.”
“I’m not there yet, but I’m on the road to that,” the Tony winner added.
He continued, “I wanted to thank everybody for your prayers and your love and sending me all the vibes … I felt every single one of them.”
Urosepsis is a type of sepsis, which is a “serious condition in which the body responds improperly to an infection,” per the Mayo Clinic. The condition can lead to septic shock, which is a dramatic drop in blood pressure that can cause damage to the lungs, kidneys, liver and other organs. Severe septic shock can also lead to death.
Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club ended its Broadway run at the August Wilson Theatre early on September 21.
“It is with a heavy heart that we have made the painful decision to end our Broadway run on Sept. 21,” producer Adam Speers said in a statement to Entertainment Weekly. “On behalf of all the producers, we’re so honored to have been able to bring this version of John Kander, Fred Ebb, and Joe Masteroff‘s important masterpiece, Cabaret, to New York and to have opened the doors to our own Kit Kat Club for the year and a half we have been here.”
“Billy was an extraordinary Emcee, bringing his signature passion and remarkable talent. We wish Billy a speedy recovery, and I look forward to working with him again in the very near future,” Speers added.
Porter portrayed the role of the Emcee in the Broadway production from July to September.
In October, Porter went Instagram official with his boyfriend, Eric Anderson. “🤎🤎 #datenight,” Porter and Anderson captioned a joint Instagram post at the time.
Porter was previously married to Adam Smith from 2017 to 2023. The couple announced their separation after six years of marriage in July 2023.
“I can confirm that Billy Porter and his husband Adam Smith have made the sad decision to end their marriage after six years,” a representative for the actor told People in a statement at the time.
“The decision was an amicable and mutual one and was made after much consideration. They continue to love and support each other as they embark on this next chapter,” the statement continued. “There will be no further comment from either parties and it would be appreciated if their privacy be respected.”
