A Colorado woman who stands accused of murdering her two children before fleeing to the United Kingdom has been returned to American authorities and will now face justice.
Kimberlee Singler, 37, was arrested by authorities in London in December 2023, little over a week after her children were found dead inside their Colorado Springs home.
Singler had been embroiled in a bitter custody battle at the time she allegedly killed her 7-year-old son, Aden Wentz, and her 9-year-old daughter, Elianna Wentz. Police say she tried to kill her other daughter, but the child, who was 11 at the time, survived.
The murders happened back on December 19, 2023. She allegedly fatally stabbed her two children, while the surviving child was allegedly stabbed multiple times as she begged her mother to spare her.
At first, Singler was treated like a victim, due to the superficial knife wounds she had. She also had told police an intruder attacked the family.
The 11-year-old verified her mother’s claims.
She also told police her ex-husband “had previously dreamt about killing his family,” and was always trying to “frame her” and “get her arrested” so he could have full custody.
The girl later amended her story, telling investigators Singler said God made her do it, according to court files.
Singler had fled the country by the time police in the U.S. tried to detain her.
She was found four days later in west London, according to police.
It is unclear why she decided to flee to London.
Prior to the murders, Singler had been warned to either hand her kids over to the court herself or attend a hearing where the custody exchange could occur safely.
The hearing was delayed at Singler’s request, and police say she used the delay to carry out the killings.
GPS records showed that her ex-husband was nowhere near the killings when they took place.
Police also said there was no indication in the snow that a person had walked up to the home to invade it.
Singler has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder, one of attempted murder, along with three counts of child abuse and one of assault.
District attorney Michael Allen called the extradition a “momentous day.”
He added: “Kimberlee Singler is back in the United States and is in custody. Today marks the first step in the criminal justice process for this defendant and the victims in this case.”
Singler had tried fighting her extradition, with her U.K. lawyer Edward Fitzgerald arguing that she faced a sentence of life without parole if she is convicted of the most serious charges against her.
Such a punishment would violate European human rights laws, he argued unsuccessfully.
Singler is being held without bond ahead of her first court appearance which will happen in the next few days.
