Diane Keaton was a proud mom to two children.
News broke on Saturday, October 11, that Keaton had died at age 79. A cause of death was not immediately revealed, but her death was confirmed to People via a spokesperson.
In her 50s, a single Keaton adopted two children: daughter Dexter, who she adopted in 1996, and son Duke, who she adopted in 2001. In a 2019 interview with InStyle, Diane was asked if she ever regretted being a single mother.
“Never. All right?” the actress said when asked if she was dating. “Let’s just get that straight. That one’s important. I haven’t been on a date in, I would say, 35 years. No dates.”

“I’ve had a lot of independence, and nobody’s telling me what to do,” she continued. “I had a mother who encouraged that and helped me achieve the things I wanted to achieve. I’ve followed the paths I’ve wanted to follow. I like redoing houses, I like architecture, I like visuals, I like fashion, I like all of it.”

Diane became a mom for the first time in her 50s when she adopted her daughter, Dexter, in 1996, soon after her birth on December 15, 1995.
The actress has mentioned her daughter in interviews over the years. In 2012, she told AARP: The Magazine: “It takes everything I have sometimes to not snuggle with Dexter. You know, at 16, you don’t want to be snuggly anymore. Sometimes I can pat her hair. Or if I’m lucky, I get a hug.”
Dexter has generally stayed out of the spotlight as an adult, but has briefly shared glimpses into her life with her mother via social media. In 2014, Dexter shared a photo of herself and Diane via Instagram and captioned it, “Happy Mother’s Day to my amazing momma! Duke was born on February 8, 2000, and Diane adopted him in 2001.
In 2005, Diane opened up about raising both children while speaking to Life Magazine. “The shocking thing is that I worry differently now,” she explained. “Before kids, if I worried, it was only about myself, but that’s all you do is worry as a parent. It’s rule number one in parenting: secretly worry without letting the kids know you’re worried.”
