Madeline Gaudreau sees late husband Matthew in their 12-month-old son, Tripp, and she’s celebrating both of them on Tripp’s first birthday.
“Happy 1st Birthday my sweet baby boy,” Madeline wrote via Instagram on Friday, December 26. “One whole year of you. One year of smiles, curious hands, and a love so big it fills every corner of my heart. You are the most beautiful blessing, everyday with you is a reminder of how strong a love can be.”
Madeline shared her thoughts alongside a carousel of photos of Tripp, showing the little one going to town on his first birthday cake.
“I see your daddy in your smile, in your strength, your laugh and in the light you bring into this world,” she wrote.

Matthew, a former hockey player at Boston College, died in August 2024 when he and his brother, Johnny, were struck by an alleged drunk driver while riding their bikes. Matthew was 29 and Johnny, who played for the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets, was 31. They were together in New Jersey to be groomsmen in their sister Katie’s wedding, which had been scheduled for the next day.
Tripp, who is Madeline and Matthew’s only child, was born four months later. (Johnny and his wife, Meredith, shared daughter Noa, born in 2022, and son Johnny Jr., born in 2024.)
Earlier in December, Madeline celebrated what would have been Matthew’s 31st birthday by getting a tattoo bearing Tripp’s name, which she shared via Instagram. On subsequent slides, she also shared a photo of her and Matthew, writing, “Happy birthday my hubby.”
In April, she got another tattoo, getting Matthew’s No. 21 on her forearm and the initials TM and MR on her wrist.

“I wanted Matty’s initials to be right next to Tripp’s — as his dad will always be right next to him 🤍🦋,” she explained via Instagram.
Since Matthew’s death, Madeline has been open about her late husband’s desire to be a father and how she has tried to keep his spirit alive through their son. In an August appearance on Good Morning America, she was asked what she would say to Matthew if he were around.
“Thank you for making me a mom,” she replied.
“A lot of people don’t know but in January we got pregnant and had a miscarriage in February,” she continued. “So then [we] got pregnant again in March with Tripp.”

At her husband’s funeral, she vowed to make sure Tripp knew how much his father loved him.
“Matt will surround his son for the rest of his life,” she said. “I’m so thankful God gave us a child, a little Matty, to run around for life, to carry on his legacy. Tripp will know how much his father loved him, and I promise to do all the things with him we talked about.”
Meredith also promised to look after Madeline and Tripp.
“I don’t think John could live a day without you so I’m comforted knowing you are of course together in heaven,” she wrote via Instagram in August 2024. “Please continue to take care of John like you always have. I got Madeline and Tripp 🤍. We love you very much.”
