Rob Reiner’s longtime friend Barry Markowitz opened about his recent stay with the family weeks before the director and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were murdered.
“I may have been one of the last people to see them,” Markowitz said in an interview with Page Six on Tuesday, December 16.
Markowitz shared that Rob invited him to stay at his and Michele’s Los Angeles home while he was in town for the premiere of his film The Perfect Gamble last month.
“They would say, ‘You’re staying here. You’re not going to no hotel. There’s no fridge, good toilet paper, no family,’” the cinematographer recalled.
Markowitz detailed how he spent time with Rob, Michele and their children. The couple were parents of sons Jake, 34, and Nick, 32, and daughter Romy, 28. Rob was also the father of daughter Tracy, whom he adopted while married to late ex-wife Penny Marshall.
“Romy was in and out [of the house], and at dinner time she comes over and we all bulls*** together,” Markowitz reflected. “[We would] scream at the TV, we watched a movie and a basketball game. Played with the dogs. Family time. One big love fest.”
Markowitz added that Nick was also present during his visit and Nick, who has struggled with substance abuse over the years, appeared to be “on the upswing.”
“He looked great. He was sitting and talking with the family,” Markowitz said of Nick. “They eat dinner together, old-school, and a lot of love, always a lot of love.”
Markowitz added that Nick also “helped out” around the house.
“He took out the garbage, he watched TV, he washed dishes,” Markowitz said. “He’d bring me something to drink. He was just normal in that sense.”
From Markowitz’s perspective, there didn’t appear to be “anything strange” going on with the Reiners.
“They were busy working and doing stuff,” he said. “The help was there, the secretaries were there, in and out of the house … business as usual.”
News broke on Sunday, December 14, that Rob and Michele were found dead in their home. They were 78 and 70, respectively.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner,” a spokesperson for the family shared in a statement to Variety. “We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”
The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that the pair died from apparent stab wounds. Us Weekly reported that Nick was arrested on a murder charge the following day. He remains in custody with no bail. Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced on Tuesday that Nick was charged with two counts of first-degree murder. If convicted, he could serve life in prison with no parole, or receive the death penalty.
On Wednesday, December 17, Nick appeared in court for the first time since his arrest. Nick wore a suicide prevention vest during the appearance, per multiple outlets. He has yet to enter a plea.
That same day, Nick’s siblings, Jake and Romy, broke their silence on their parents’ tragic deaths.
“Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day. The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends,” they said in the statement, per TMZ. “We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness and support we have received not only from family and friends but people from all walks of life.”
