Texas Man Reveals the Reason Why He ‘Needed’ to Kill His Elderly Mother

As he was speaking with investigators, a Texas man allegedly offered up a haunting explanation for why he stabbed his mother to death: It was simply “something I needed to do.”

Police in Houston allege that those were the words spoken by Gerren Miles Crosson, 34, soon after he was charged with murdering his 71-year-old mother, Alta Green Veasley. The killing happened Wednesday, December 17, a Houston Police Department spokesperson told Us Weekly.

The initial calls that came in at approximately 2:30 a.m. that morning claimed an assault had occurred at Veasley’s home. But cops arrived to find a much different scene.

Inside the home was Veasley, fading fast from multiple stab wounds, including twice to the heart. She was also stabbed once in the back of the head and right arm and twice in the face, Houston Police confirmed.

As she was breathing her last, police claim Veasley made a dying declaration, identifying her attacker as her son, Crosson. He was immediately handcuffed by police.

Despite paramedics rushing her to the nearest hospital, doctors could do nothing and pronounced her dead.

While in cuffs, and still at the grisly murder scene, Crosson allegedly told officers, “I felt like it was something I needed to do.” Police did not release additional information about the son’s potential motive or what may have preceded the deadly attack.

But mother and son haven’t always gotten along. The police spokesperson confirmed for Us Weekly Crosson has allegedly assaulted his mother in 2021, repeatedly striking her in the face following a disagreement over food. He was charged with injury to an elderly person, but the case was later dismissed, at his mother’s behest.

The son also pleaded guilty to evading police back in 2010.

Crosson was in court on Friday for the first hearing in his case. The outcome of that proceeding, including any pleas that may have been entered by him or his lawyers, was still unknown at press time.

He remains in police custody on a $750,000 bond.

According to her obituary, Veasley’s death “has left her family, friends, and community in deep sorrow, as they mourn the loss of a woman remembered for her warmth, generosity, and the love she shared so freely.”

The obituary added Alta was “cherished by all who knew her,” and that she was known for “making others feel welcome and valued, whether through her kindness, her thoughtful words, or her ability to bring comfort in times of need.” She was also a doting grandmother, the obituary continued.

It also seemingly addressed the manner with which she died, noting her death triggered an investigation.

“While the community awaits answers, the focus remains on honoring Alta’s life and the legacy she leaves behind,” it read, “Her memory continues to inspire those who were touched by her compassion and generosity. Friends and neighbors in Southwest Houston remember Alta as someone who could brighten any day with her smile and caring nature. She was deeply committed to her loved ones, and her absence leaves a void that cannot be filled. The tributes shared by those who knew her reflect the profound impact she had on their lives.”
