Culsans added, “She also showed us how to face the hardest things with grace. Her last months were full of pain, fear and uncertainty, but she never stopped being ‘her.’ Even when words wouldn’t come, you could see in her eyes the same kindness, the same wittiness, the same strength. She held on for as long as she could, not for herself, but for us.”

Two days later, Culsans revealed that his grandmother had “suffered a major stroke” and would be undergoing “heavy treatment,” as well as tests to address an “anomaly in her lungs.”

Culsans shared another update in early November.

“Her mind and speech remain seriously impaired. most sentences are either entirely illegible or simply don’t make sense,” he wrote. “Her bones are in agony, and it’s absolutely heartbreaking to witness. my mum and I had to take frequent breaks to have a place to both cry and digest everything and to be strong for grandma when she needed us most.”
